The History of Machine Embroidery

The first sewing machine was patented by Issac Singer in 1846 and almost 20 years prior to that, Josua Heilmann, invented a hand embroidery machine that could do the work of four hand embroiderers. This machine was feared to be a threat to the hand embroiderers and ultimately had sold only 2 units, but this technology led to the development of modern age embroidery machines.

Issac Groebli from Switzerland created the Schiffli Machine. This machine used the combination of a continuously threaded needle and a shuttle that contained a bobbin of thread. Issac Groebli’s son later created the automatic Schiffli machine.

In 1911, Singer Sewing Company introduced the first multi-head embroidery sewing machine. This embroidery sewing machine was equipped with six heads and a pantograph attachment.

The first computer graphic embroidery design that ran on a minicomputer was introduced by Wilcom in 1980. Randal Melton and Bill Childs formed Melco, an international distribution network. Melco created the very first embroidery sample head to be used with large Schiffli looms and these looms spanned several feet and produced large embroidery patterns. The sample head helped the embroiderers to save time by avoiding manually sewing the design sample. This became the first computerized embroidery machine.

Later in 1980, Melco gave the world, Digitrac. Digitrac was a digitizing system for embroidery machines. It consisted of a small computer, on an X and Y axis on a large white board.

The first multi-user system, which allowed more than one person to work on the embroidery process, was introduced in 1982.

In the late 1990s, computerized embroidery machines became more popular with the fall of costs of computers, software and embroidery machines. Many independent and individual companies started to sell their own range of embroidery machines and free designs were found on the internet.

From hand embroidery to computerized embroidery, embroidery has come a long way. Today, with the advancements in the modern day computerized embroidery, it is possible to stitch almost everything in a very lesser time as compared to the time required if done by hand.
